ABOUT WATERCOLOR

WATERCOLOR  IS KNOWN AND LOVED FOR IT'S TRANSPARENCY.   THE PIGMENTS ARE SUSPENDED IN WATER AND TRADITIONALLY  APPLIED TO A PAPER SUPPORT.  THE PIGMENTS ALLOW LIGHT TO FILTER THROUGH THE PAINT GIVING A TRANSLUCENT, LUMINOUS EFFECT.  THE BEAUTY OF WATERCOLOR IS ACHIEVED AS PAINTS MINGLE ON PAPER.

THE ART MEDIUM 'S CONTINUOUS HISTORY DATES BACK TO  THE RENAISSANCE.  ALBRECHT DUER (1471-1528)  PAINTED FLORAL ILLUSTRATIONS IN WATERCOLOR.

TODAY INKS AND OTHER WATER SOLUABLE  PIGMENTS MAY BE USED.  MANY SURFACES  SUCH AS  PAPER, RICE PAPER, YUPO, CANVAS, LEATHER AND OTHER SUPPORTS  ARE USED.

ABOUT MY WATERCOLORS

AFTER RETIRING TO FLORIDA IN 1992 I BEGAN PAINTING IN WATERCOLOR.  I ENJOY THE BEAUTUFUL COLOR  ACHIEVED AS PAINT AND WATER MOVE ACROSS THE SURFACE.  SINCE WATERCOLOR HAS A MIND OF IT OWN A LITTLE PLANNING AND A GOOD SKETCH GO A LONG WAY.

I LIKE TO DO A DESIGN ON TRANSPARENT TRACING PAPER WORKING OUT THE BUGS BEFORE DRAWING ON THE SURFACE.  I SAVE MY DRAWINGS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.

AS A WATERCOLOR INSTRUCTOR I HAVE WORKED ON A NUMBER OF SURFACES AND LEARNED MANY TECHNIQUES OVER THE YEARS.  MY STUDENTS START BY PAINTING SIMPLE SUBJECTS WHERE THEY CAN GET THE FEEL OF MINGLING PAINT.  MY MORE ADVANCED STUDENTS HAVE POURED PAINT, THROWN PAINT, GLAZED, PAINTED USING OBJECTS SUCH AS GUAZE, WAX PAPER, SAND, SALT AND OTHER THINGS TO CREATE TEXTURE.

BEING A TEACHER HAS BROUGHT ME GREAT JOY OVER THE YEARS.  TODAY I TEACH A FEW BATIK WORKSHOPS AND PAINT MORE FOR EXHIBITION.
