Biography

About Jan Fetters......

Jan is a retired postal manager who began painting full-time after retirement, she has painted in most mediums but favors oil and watercolor.  She is a popular watercolor instructor in Central Florida.

She has become known for watercolors in a Batik Style on rice paper. The process of layering paint and melted wax is tedious, but Fetters says she loves working on a piece, sometimes for weeks.  Berry Alderdice of BSD Galleries in Lake Wales, FL, says, "This centuries-old art form finds new life in the varied subject matter of the paintings shown.... it is easy to see why Jan is so respected as an artist and teacher."

Jan is mainly self-taught; however, since 1993, she has taken numerous workshops with many nationally known artists such as Nicholas Simmons, Frank Webb, Thomas Schaller, Jan Kunz, Rose Edin, Chen Khee Chee, Don Andrews and Arleta Pech.  In 2006, she studied at LaRomita Art School in Terni, Italy.

ARTIST STATEMENT

For me, along with family. painting and music have high priority in life.  I enjoy putting paint to canvas with abandon letting the brush bounce along as if conducting a symphony.  I love to create broken brushstrokes and texture in my piece similar to what I admire in the Great Impressionists.

Watercolor is fun because it has a mind of it's own.  One is never sure of the outcome so a little planning goes a long way. Once  I have a plan and have selected a subject that excites me I let the water move the paint. My batiks take a lot of time, but I love every minute from planning, to layering hot wax,
to finishing a piece.

My summers are spent in Ohio where my studio overlooks a wooded area. It is a peaceful place where I can be quiet, listen to music and let my vision and brush take over. When I return to Florida I look forward to sharing my love of painting with students.
